Shades of gray in an 80 m² apartment in Paris

The challenge: combining contemporary simplicity with Haussmannian charm 80 m² Paris, France 130 000 € Retro-contemporary Two-bedroom Julien Dufresne Architecture

This 80-square-meter top-floor Parisian apartment was lacking in charm and suffered from a cramped layout. It was up to architect Julien Dufresne to remedy the situation.
After revealing the herringbone parquet flooring that had been hidden under carpeting, Julien Dufresne decided to completely redesign the layout, making it parallel to the façade in order to preserve natural light and open up the space on the window side.

The kitchen, located in the center of the apartment, opens onto the living room through two large openings on either side of a load-bearing wall. Its subtle palette of pink and gray elegantly articulates the “day” and “night” spaces, creating a visual and functional link between the different areas.

Full-height retractable doors conceal appliances and everyday clutter in the custom-made kitchen. Only the immaculate gray marble countertop, pierced by a sink, remains visible, combining practicality and elegance. Its veining subtly echoes that of the table.

On the façade side, the opening of the kitchen onto the living room allows the eye to wander, revealing the continuity of the spaces and highlighting the natural light coming through the row of windows.

Custom-made shelves fit into the recesses of the chimney flues, highlighting the whiteness of the walls and showcasing the moldings and the light gray marble fireplace, a subtle echo of the kitchen.

A desk enjoys a prime location between the fireplace and window.

The gray sofas and glass coffee table adopt a minimalist approach: here, the real protagonist is the natural light, which sculpts the space and enhances every detail.

The continuous balcony, connected to the apartment by large French windows, acts as a true extension of the interior space.

A minimalist custom-made bookcase holds the owners’ many paperback books. Its white shelves, arranged in a regular pattern, rest on a claustra base.

Meet Julien Dufresne, the man behind the renovation of this Parisian apartment.

In this bedroom, gray, the project’s guiding theme, is found on the headboard, while the rest of the space remains white, from the walls to the sleek lighting, creating a soothing, minimalist atmosphere enhanced by natural light and the warm character of the hardwood flooring.

The mouse-gray headboard complements Kartell’s iconic white Componibili Classic storage module.

An office, guest room, and home theater, this all-white room highlights the warm, glossy wood flooring, which reflects the light. The eye is drawn to the outside, while the gray sofa gently extends the project’s color scheme.

The loft bed frees up floor space and creates an office area, optimizing the space without compromising on comfort.

Combining modernity and simplicity, the bathroom features a light color palette, playing on shades of (you guessed it) gray. Geometry takes center stage here: an irregularly shaped mirror adds a certain dynamism to the overall design.
