Sous les vagues, les cimes coat hook
A Sloft x Ekhi Busquet collaboration
Sous les vagues, les cimes [Beneath the waves, the peaks, editor’s note]… An evocative name, one that almost takes you on a journey, for such a small, functional sculpture. A blue coat hook with curved lines, calling to mind the waves of the Mediterranean and the peaks of one of the most famous Provençal mountains in the (art) world.
“The blue-tinged phantom of the Sainte-Victoire mountain hovered at the edge of his consciousness and followed him across all the landscapes he encountered”, wrote Aix-en-Provence-born poet Joachim Gasquet about his recollections of painter Cézanne in 1921. Designer Ekhi Busquet was able to capture this same feeling and love for the South in her creation. A playful nod and a perfectly assumed reference from a creator very much in tune with her motherland. The sea, the mountains, soft shapes and deep blues are a constant in her work. That, and her “Made in France” guarantee, of course. We sat down with the designer to discuss her creation.
Can you tell us more about this collaboration?
It evolved around two major themes: my love for everything Mediterranean, and a passion shared with the Sloft team for household objects that are cleverly designed… and elegant, of course [laughs, editor’s note]. I was free to create whatever I wanted. I started to think about somewhat constrained spaces. In a smaller apartment, you are often faced with the problem of a bulky coat rack, its feet often infringing on precious square centimeters. So I wanted to provide a solution that was both practical and decorative, that could be placed anywhere around the home, in the entrance, the living room, wherever. And one that could be kept for a long time. A bit like the Sainte-Victoire. The mountain was here before us, and she’ll still be here long after we’re gone. I decided to top it all off with a slightly poetic note, a small bud vase integrated at the top of the object. A final flourish conversing with the curves and the Majorelle blue tone. All that remained was to find the right gesture, the right line.
And the right production method!
Yes! For me, the fact that my creations are handmade in France is very important. My job is very Paris-centric, but I also undertake many local and meaningful collaborations around social or societal issues. My house is full of objects resulting from these encounters: cushions made with a gang of knitting grannies, a wall vase developed with a wrought-iron craftsman from the region… So there was no reason for this not to be the case with the coat hook. And luckily I wasn’t faced with too many objections [laughs, again, editor’s note]. This object was designed to last. The same goes for the origin of the materials. The coat hook is made from beech plywood sourced from sustainably-managed French forests. To be a designer, for me, is also to be aware of these things when creating each new object!
