Reflections of Provence in a two-level Montreuil 68 m²

Gabrielle and Clément find their family nest in a former mirror factory 68 m² Montreuil, France Industrial Two-storey Julien Dufresne Architecture

From a blank page springs a new chapter, through serendipity. Gabrielle, the owner of this sun-drenched loft, explains how it all happened.

By 2022, Gabrielle and her husband had already settled in Montreuil: “We wanted to stay in the neighborhood. We had just missed out on an apartment that we were considering buying.” This turned out to be a blessing in disguise: at the same time, the couple heard about a nearby renovation project. ” It was in a former Montreuil mirror factory, next to a small park that we loved. We couldn’t have dreamed of a better location.” Less built-up and less expensive per square meter than inner Paris, this outlying city has a lot going for it, including a real neighborhood feel and peace and quiet that is particularly appreciated by the expectant parents, who jumped on the occasion to buy this 68 square meter space.

With just a concrete floor, cinder block walls, and timber framing to go by, Gabrielle and Clément immediately saw the potential that many others would struggle to envision. ” The trees in the gardens facing the building were in bloom when we visited; the view had something bucolic about it, the whole project was set back from the main road. The proximity of the Bois de Vincennes and a very large park made the place even more attractive. ” With the help of architect Julien Dufresne, founder of the JDA agency, they set about transforming the two-level space into a family haven. Its south-facing exposure and the absence of any opposing neighbors were major assets. “Above all,” continues Gabrielle, it was the first time that we had the opportunity to live in a place that really suited us, a made-to-measure apartment, perfectly adapted to our growing family.

The resulting atmosphere is one of serenity and simplicity. On the ground floor, the kitchen stands out in a beautiful terracotta color-blocking effect. Upstairs, other earthy tones punctuate the two sleeping areas – that of the two children, who still sleep in the same room, and that of the couple. The apartment also (naturally) incorporates all the expected modern features. The large living room, extended by a terrace, alternately serves as a playground, reading corner, entertaining or relaxation area. The upper level accommodates a clever office and plenty of storage space in addition to the family bathroom, along with the bedrooms.

The place will have seen Gabrielle and Clément’s children take their first steps: “We may have to move when they grow up,” she muses. “But even if we don’t stay there all our lives, this duplex will have allowed us to plan for the future in a different way, and with complete peace of mind, during these first years of our life as a family of four.”

The former mirror factory that houses the apartment features a large courtyard.

A very successful blend of old and new, the place has the bucolic character of a country house.

The entrance is directly through the door on the left. White walls meet parquet flooring: the deliberately understated materials emphasize the spaciousness of the recently renovated premises.

Turning to the left, we see a generous wooden table that seems like a perfect fit for its bench companion, which adds storage space. Sconce: AM.PM.

In the background, a long row of cupboards provides ample storage space.

The bold kitchen uses the same color scheme as the neighboring buildings: “I also wanted a warm color that evokes certain parts of Provence,” explains Gabrielle. The contrast between the matte facades and the shiny zellige tiles (Mosaic Factory) gives the kitchen a modern look.

Depending on the time of day, the color becomes luminous or immersive.

From reading to lounging to dining, the ground floor’s 34 m² surface area serves a multitude of functions. The toilet area is under the stairs.

The family cat has also benefits from a bit of private space.

Beyond the large bay window lies the terrace and its clapboard partition. On the wall above the sofa is a photo of Belle-Île-en-Mer, a wedding gift to the couple.

I wanted a place where our family could grow away from the hustle and bustle, she explains.

The peace and quiet here is indeed divine.

Meanwhile, on the upper level…

On the landing, a studious atmosphere is established by a mini office opposite the stairs. It precedes the family bathroom, behind the rounded wall.

Turning around, we see the children’s cocoon-like bedroom, which features a crib and a child-size bed. Carpet: OYOY Living Design. Armchair: Maisons du Monde.

Clever built-in storage runs the length of the wall behind the book display and the bed, providing a place to put away toys, stuffed animals and other treasures.

Do not disturb: Timur loves to bask in the overhead light.

The primary bedroom is a haven of peace, framed by built-in cupboards on either side.

While they may occupy the full height of the room, they remain discreet.

A sconce punctuates the wall.

The roof was insulated at the same time as the skylights were installed by architect Julien Dufresne.

Another row of cupboards lines the front wall. Above it is the structure of the roof frame of the former mirror factory, which has been preserved.
