Pretty in Pink: a 54 m² apartment in Paris

A generous cocoon that will leave you tickled pink 54 m² Paris, France Trendy One-bedroom LABOPOP

The LABOPOP agency came up with a candy-coated space for Caroline, which they nicknamed

“La Bonbonnière.”

“It’s a colorful, small and welcoming space, like a box of bonbons,” the architects explain. Nestled in the attic of a Haussmann building, it has been thoroughly dipped in pink, the owner’s favorite color. Seduced by her neighbor’s apartment, also renovated by LABOPOP, Caroline contacted the latter’s founders, Ania and Jérémie Brault, to help her with her own project. “When Caroline bought the apartment, she carried out a few small improvements, then lived there for a while before realizing that everything needed to be redone,” explains the duo. “The bathroom was tiny and windowless, and the kitchen was separated from the living room. And when you walked in, you came upon the WC, right in the middle of the apartment!

However, the property boasts a number of valuable assets, such as its triple exposure and high ceilings, which LABOPOP set out to highlight while meeting Caroline’s expectations, as she had a very precise idea of what she wanted. ” The specifications were quite ambitious for such a compact area. Everything had to be large: the kitchen, the living room, the bookcase, the separate bedroom, the wardrobe, the shower room… plus an extra room for guests. “The existing mezzanine would have been ideal for hosting friends if its wooden structure hadn’t been so rickety.” LABOPOP thus decided to demolish it and build a new block to accommodate the upper level. Positioned in the center of the apartment, it houses the kitchen, storage space and a large wardrobe, while an attractive pool ladder leads up to the guest bedroom above.

From the mezzanine to the kitchen, including the new shower room, pink, the young woman’s favorite color, reigns supreme: “For me, Caroline is a true incarnation of the Pink Panther character,” explains Ania. “She’s elegant, mysterious and slightly mischievous.
She has a fondness for the color pink that I’ve never seen in anyone. I think it’s a reflection of her extraordinary character and personality. She loves pop culture, collects Bearbricks and the works of Yoshitomo Nara, and adores George Byrne’s poetic surrealism.”
So she needed an apartment that suited her to a tee, and – pinkie promise – LABOPOP delivered.

However, to live La vie en rose to the fullest, one should take care to judiciously employ chromatic variations, thus avoiding any risk of saturation. That’s why the agency decided to broaden the palette used within the apartment. ” It was important for us to combine different shades of pink to create different moods. A bright, energetic pink for the ladder; a softer, more discreet powder pink for the bookshelf; candy pink to create a soft atmosphere in the bedroom; and a more pronounced pink for the bathroom.” No need for rose-colored glasses here!

Nestled in the attic, Caroline’s apartment enjoys a lovely view of the neighboring Haussmann buildings.

Caroline’s taste for pop culture is perceptible right from the entrance, which is adorned with comic strips that point the way to the bedroom.

When she wakes up in the morning, even when the sky is gray, life just seems peachy keen. There’s no other option in a room like this,” laughs the founders of LABOPOP. Walls, ceiling, furniture, hanging lights, bed linen, knick-knacks: everything here is decked out in candy pink.

The white-painted entryway prepares you for the next blast of pink, this time in the salmon-colored shower room.

The shower room is bathed in natural light thanks to a large skylight. The whiteness of Trone’s Callipyge wall-hung toilet contrasts with the color of the walls and ceiling.

Behind the sink (French Vikings) large marble-effect panels give the room a certain elegance, underlined by numerous black details. LABOPOP opted for a Cielo cabinet mirror, designed by Andrea Parisio and Giuseppe Pezzano, which conceals clever storage units. Fantini taps, designed by Davide Mercatali.

In the living room, a sparkling pink disco ball sets the tone – in every sense of the word.

The floor, walls and framework were painted white to highlight the plentiful pink elements. The antique furniture was renovated by BON BrandOldNew, a company run by Caroline’s sister, Anne-Laure de Barneville.

A Vertigo pendant by Petite Friture hangs over the two Saba Italy sofas.

A large bespoke wooden bookcase, painted powder pink, occupies one wall of the living room. Caroline uses it to store her collections of books and curios.

The bookcase, divided into square compartments, follows the slope of the roof. Needless to say, the pink books have taken pride of place in the front row.

Turning around, we discover the spacious kitchen, which is exceptionally well-lit thanks to the use of reflective and white surfaces. Some of the kitchen units are located under the new mezzanine.

And here’s our very own Pink Panther, aka Caroline.

Caroline had a collection of prints by American photographers that she really liked, which she asked me to keep from the start. As we didn’t have much free wall space to display them on, we used them as fronts for the custom-made furniture,” Ania explains.

Above the Silestone quartz countertop, the mirror-covered storage units and backsplash further enhance the already generous dimensions of the kitchen. Over the top is the mezzanine with its pink railing.

“During the design phase, we tried several types of compact staircases, but in the end, we opted for this minimalist option that looks like a pool ladder, making the mezzanine into a guest room where guests can dive into their dreams,” laughs Ania.

A little octopus is keeping the bed warm for the guests, in the perfect spot to enjoy the sunshine streaming in through the skylight.

Leaning over the railing on the mezzanine, one almost feels like diving into the cotton candy-like sofa down below.
