A 60 m² pop of color in the Spanish countryside

The challenge: adapting the concept of a rural outbuilding to contemporary uses 60 m² Sierra de Gredos, Ávila, Spain 40 000 € Cosy minimalism Eco-contemporary House Extrarradio

Located at the highest point of a meadow in the Sierra de Gredos mountains in Spain, this cabin, designed by architects from the Extrarradio agency, blends discreetly into the landscape.

Partially embedded into the slope, the original structure has been topped with an extension covered in ceramic tiles, a traditional material in the region, which provides protection from the elements and ensures continuity with the surrounding architectural style, all while asserting a resolutely contemporary design.

The living room is organized around a square bay window, framing the landscape. The terrace acts as a natural extension of the living space, promoting continuity between indoors and outdoors.

The building’s structure is clearly visible in the living room: a concrete base anchored into the ground, topped by walls and a pine roof structure that creates a warm atmosphere.

At the heart of the project, a separate volume houses the more functional spaces. Detached from the perimeter walls, this block preserves the feeling of open space and accentuates the monolithic presence of the envelope. The circular opening creates a visual connection between the kitchen and living room, while the central wood stove becomes both a source of heat and a focal point of the home.

The kitchen’s simple, efficient design reveals itself through the oversized porthole. Natural and industrial materials blend harmoniously, while red furniture and decorative elements add a touch of vibrancy to a space otherwise dominated by gray.

The staircase leading to the mezzanine is part of the compact, well-designed layout. Its gray color matches that of the kitchen and living room walls.

Located in the upper part of the house, the sleeping area takes full advantage of the project’s heat-efficient design. The mezzanine captures most of the heat emitted by the central wood stove, ensuring optimal comfort on winter nights. This commanding position also enhances the sense of space, while making the bedroom a functional and cozy retreat.

The masonry headboard that takes pride of place in the middle of the mezzanine anchors the sleeping area. It is contrasted by touches of colorful, vintage-inspired furniture. The red metal chest of drawers and matching clothes rack introduce a playful note to this sober universe.

Located under the mezzanine, the open bathroom optimizes residual space without compromising on comfort. The mirror, positioned opposite the window, captures and reflects natural light, visually enlarging the space and strengthening the connection with the outside world.

The terrace is a true outdoor living space. The orange pergola makes a bold statement, introducing a contemporary and colorful touch that contrasts with the simplicity of the architecture and the surrounding landscape.
