50 m² in Montegrosso d’Asti: a reinvented caretaker’s cottage

The challenge: reinventing a caretaker's cottage without losing its rural character 50 m² Montegrosso d'Asti, Italy 150 000 € Retro-contemporary House Atelierzero

Nestled in the hills of Asti, the Gate House discreetly fits into the landscape of the Valle Pome estate, a rural complex comprising several historic buildings.

The weathered facade has been repainted in its original color, restoring the original presence of the site and its integration into the existing agricultural complex, with its villa, stables and barn.

The living room is organized around a built-in bench and a bull’s-eye window that frames the landscape, making this opening the focal point of the room. The original fireplace has been revisited in a contemporary style while respecting its rustic character.

The living room features clean, minimalist lines, accentuated by an ochre-colored band at the top of the whitewashed wall. De Rerum’s Il Disco sconces work as a superimposed duo. The orange version subtly complements the sofa.

The dining room blends seamlessly into the living room, in a continuous dialogue with natural materials, starting with the dark oak parquet floor. The overall simplicity of the space is punctuated by the presence of design pieces that subtly add rhythm to the room.
The first floor is organized around a compact yet optimized living space, incorporating a kitchen designed to maximize the available space. The kitchen is set between two large marble-framed openings, linking the staircase on one side and the storage area on the other. It thus serves as a connecting element rather than a separate space.

The kitchen has a minimalist design, with white base cabinets that blend into the architecture. The wall clad in zellige tiles adds a subtle texture, while the Bacchetta Magica pendant light by Viabizzuno gently accentuates the space.

The play of materials on the staircase combines terracotta treads with celadon-blue lime-rendered risers, creating a soft, controlled contrast. As a counterpoint, the dark blue resin in the entryway extends this nuanced interpretation of the finishes and anchors the entire design in a resolutely artisanal approach.
On the first floor, the bathroom is a direct interpretation of materials and light. Marble, resin and enveloping ochre hues create a sober atmosphere. Quadro Design faucets and Ceramica Cielo floor-standing WC.

A marble niche is carved into the thickness of the wall, serving both a functional and sculptural purpose, like a detail carved directly into the material. Il Disco wall lamps by De Rerum.

The colorful doors serve as visual anchors in the space, defining thresholds and creating a more graphic interpretation of the layout. They mark the entrance to a separate bedroom and bathroom, where the color palette features local hues, ranging from warm shades to deeper, more enveloping tones.

The bedroom features a custom-made headboard and a full-height armoire, both in a deep brick color.

The shower is integrated directly into the bedroom, creating a unified space that blurs functional boundaries. Clad in Appiani tiles, it features a bull’s-eye window offering views of the garden and the estate’s grounds.

Upstairs, the chromatic palette is reversed from that of the first floor, creating a more intimate atmosphere. Sconces underline this tonal shift, extending the dialogue between light and material.
