The “Sublimons les saveurs de l’ivresse” tea towel
Sloft x Vava Dudu
If we asked you to describe a tea towel, you likely wouldn’t know what to say. Honestly, have you ever been surprised by a tea towel? Has a tea towel ever inspired an emotional response or gotten you jazzed on an aesthetic level? We doubt it… Unfortunately, the tea towel is one of those utilitarian textiles that designers tend to ignore. Unlike the t-shirt for example, which has largely earned its stripes. But that was all before the creation of the Sublimons les saveurs de l’ivresse tea towel.
Our original creation began with an ultra-classic model featuring a woven border. Vava Dudu reinterpreted the classic tea towel, adding notebook-style lines and elements from her various disciplines: poetry, graphic design and textile design. The result is an ode to the pleasures of the mouth. Because a tea towel is never far from the kitchen and its ensuing feasts. The most careful among you will frame it. Those with more of a punk attitude will use it to dry the dishes, even at the risk of staining the good china with acrylic paint! The tea towel pictured here is the only one of its kind that’s been produced for the time being. But Vava Dudu will produce more of them, upon special order.
Can you tell us about the tea towel you designed for us?
So, the tea towel, yes. Actually, I love tea towels. Often when I find tea towels—I had just bought some in Venice—it is always with the idea of turning them into an item of clothing, like a small skirt, because you can make a skirt from two tea towels. Or a small tunic or top, or you can just use it as a dishcloth. Or as a small tablecloth for eating on the go. To each his own, you could frame it if you want. I have a bit of a “love-desire” thing going on right now, as I often do, but specifically right now. The words I wrote on it come from some text I wrote during my time in Montmartre, which are about the tongue, the mouth. The lyrics I write for my band La Chatte always revolve around desire, love, the tongue, language. I went over the tea towel’s stitching, it made me think of a notebook. It reminds me of when I made clothes from classic gingham tablecloths!
Both graphic patterns and written text appear frequently in your work.
Sometimes a sentence slips out just like that, in a flash of brilliance, even before the song exists. When I have to write, the words often appear like this. I think I get the art of slogan writing from my mother. She is equally good at it. These days they are called ‘punchlines’, people recently told me “l like your punchlines”, it made me laugh!
