Nestled within the Clifton & Hotwells Conservation Area in Bristol, “The Old Pottery” is a new-build home designed by local architect Lizzie O’Neill from EJ Studio. Constructed on a slender plot, the design pays homage to the charm and allure of local vernacular mews houses, combining classic architectural elements with a contemporary interior that optimizes space and light for efficient, compactliving.
Originally a modest lean-to hosting a bookbinders workshop in 1979, then a pottery shop starting in 2005, the original building held minimal architectural significance. Now, as “The Old Pottery,” it’s a compact 68 square-meter space championing sustainable design, employing energy-efficient principles and – let’s face it – is an all-around triumph in contrast within Clifton’s rather traditional Princess Victoria Street.
The interior includes two generously-sized bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms to the ground floor, while the first floor comprises an open plan living, kitchen and dining area with a separate study.
Upon entering the building at street level, visitors are instantly greeted by a sense of calm and tranquility. Skillful craftsmanship is used to seamlessly conceal the appliances, while the walls and joinery are coated in a neutral color palette. The hallway floor is covered in reclaimed terracotta floor tiles, and a strategically positioned skylight bathes the crafted plywood stairwell in natural light, extending an invitation to ascend to the upper floor.
The first-floor living area is inviting and surprisingly open. Subtle off-white walls and white-washed oak flooring infuses warmth and elegance throughout the home. The kitchen showcases the artistry of HUSK, with its full-height backsplash and slate-hued Neolith countertop that extends over the somewhat small yet stately breakfast bar.
An adjoining dining area includes a bespoke bench seat, and an adjacent outdoor terrace confidently embodies a fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces.
“The Old Pottery” stands as a testament to EJ Studio’s vision in merging the heritage of traditional architecture with innovative design elements, resulting in a space that not only respects the past but also encapsulates the essence of contemporary living. This fusion of timeless charm and modern functionality makes “The Old Pottery” a remarkable and inviting residence in the heart of Clifton.
