Joséphine Larère was entrusted with the renovation of this under-roof studio in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, and completely redesigned the layout. Her aim was to increase the apartment’s surface area by removing as much clutter as possible, and to bring light into every corner.
The White walls, utensil rack and kitchen counter reflect daylight. To avoid darkening or cluttering the space, Joséphine Larere imagined a kitchen without any wall units.
Every corner of the apartment is home to numerous built-in storage units, essential for making daily life easier in a small apartment!
All wooden elements were made to measure in varnished okoumé plywood. The existing terracotta floor was carefully restored and updated.
Joséphine Larere decided to open up the entire volume to create an open-plan, walk-through space, in order to increase light and visually expand the space. All the apartment’s technical elements are grouped together along the same wall.
An openwork bookshelf separates the kitchen from the living room. The particularly deep shelves store dishes and trinkets, while allowing light (and glances) to flow freely from one space to the other.
A functional wood-clad strip rationalizes the space by regrouping the kitchen, toilet, shower room, laundry cupboard and plenty of storage space, while taking advantage of the sloping ceiling.
To echo the wooden bookcase that separates the kitchen from the rest of the studio, a wooden shelf has been placed above the toilet.
The bathroom is minimalist: white tiles, a large mirror… Everything is done to visually enlarge this small room.
Any space that can be saved is worth taking, and a retractable ladder provides access to the mezzanine above the kitchen. A roof window provides lovely natural lighting!
Taking advantage of the higher ceilings in the kitchen area, Joséphine Larere installed the bedroom under the roof. A metal railing guarantees the safety of the sleepers! On the lower floor, the staircase bookcase echo’s with a second bookshelf.
The staircase bookshelf in okoumé plywood is the centerpiece of the project. Combining several uses, it is as functional as it is decorative.
