A few steps away from the royal apartments and the park in Caserta, near Naples, a former 45-square-meter warehouse has been transformed into a treasure trove of memories. Designed by architect Gae Avitabile, the project breathes new life into inherited, secondhand, and sometimes forgotten objects. From these fragments of memory arose a coherent whole, where each room forms part of an intimate, lovingly lived-in interior.
Beneath the mezzanine, the kitchen is organized around an old piece of furniture that has been transformed into a functional workstation. It features a sink, a souvenir from one of the owners’ travels, and a countertop, all while retaining its original patina. The restored terracotta tile floor further enhances the character of the space.
On the wall, antique decorative elements interact with a vintage Italian refrigerator.
In keeping with the theme, a low cabinet concealed behind a curtain provides storage for tableware and everyday items.
In the center of the room, the dining area nestles beneath the window and its vintage curtains. The suspended mezzanine, made of white steel, structures the ceiling.
From the kitchen, the eye naturally wanders to the living room. The passageway, marked by woodwork painted in a patinated green, creates a smooth transition.
In the living room, an anarchic collection of furniture and objects from all eras comes together to create a familiar, welcoming atmosphere.
Natural light, filtered through a hemp curtain, softens the atmosphere. A combination of traditional and geometric patterns creates a delicate tableau, from the fabric of the sofa to the ornamentation of the furniture, right down to the rug on the floor.
From the living room, a narrow passageway emerges, softened by a light-colored curtain, hinting at the bathroom as a private, secluded space.
The room is distinguished by its earthenware decor, created from an old floor, whose circular patterns punctuate the walls.
On the ceiling, the “bisnonna” chandelier adds a delicate yet striking touch to the overall effect.
