Into the light: 27 m² in Suresnes

The challenge: transforming a windowless garage into a bright living space 27 m² Suresnes, France 54 000 € Cosy minimalism One-bedroom O-ficina Architecture

At the back of a co-owned building's yard, the O-ficina Architecture agency transformed a former garage and shed, which had no windows and were in poor condition, into a 27-square-meter apartment bathed in light.
Carried out almost entirely by the owners themselves, the renovation faced significant access constraints—through a single 60-centimeter-wide door—and the need to completely rethink the structure and envelope of the building in order to create a comfortable living space.

The creation of openings with sliding shutters, handcrafted from solid oak, was at the heart of the project. Designed to frame views of the garden and promote natural ventilation, they allow light to flood through the entire space while preserving the privacy of the residents.

Rather than dividing up the space, the project uses differences in level and the geometry of the floor plan to organize the functions. The kitchen, living room, and bedroom are arranged in a row, offering a clear and continuous view of the space.

No partition separates the living room from the bedroom: a half-height closet is enough to delineate the sleeping area, which is slightly set back. This subtle arrangement preserves the visual continuity of the space and prevents it from feeling closed in. Armchairs: Grete Jalk, purchased at Galerie Mobler.

The solid oak flooring, light-colored walls, and handcrafted woodwork give the space a serene and bright atmosphere. Outline sofa by Muuto.

The openings were designed to serve specific purposes: at eye level in the dining room and living room, they frame panoramic views of the garden, while higher up in the bedroom and bathroom, they provide privacy while ensuring natural ventilation.

Separating the bedroom from the living room, the Irmaos Enes lacquered MDF wardrobe structures the space while providing valuable storage space.
A step marks the transition between the living room and the kitchen, framed by a large opening in the wall. Made of oak plywood, the furniture complements the studio’s woodwork, while the white ceramic countertop matches the immaculate shade of the walls to enhance the overall brightness.
The bathroom, bathed in overhead light, echoes the style of the kitchen: the white ceramic tiles in the shower complement the countertop, while the oak vanity unit ties in with the other woodwork in the project.
The dining room is nestled in an alcove, where an oak plywood storage bench (Irmaos Enes) complements a Result chair by Hay. Notes shelves by Cruso complete the ensemble, combining functionality and elegance.

In this alcove, natural light streams in through a large square window, set at table height so that every meal is accompanied by a pleasant view of the outdoors.
