Built in Athens in the 1980s, this small 20-square-meter attic apartment overlooking Helicon Hill has been home to three generations of women as they carried out their studies.
After decades of use, a complete renovation was needed to breathe new life into this well-worn space, making it bright and comfortable, while respecting its history and working within a modest budget.
Commissioned for this project, Federica Scalise completely redesigned the layout of the apartment. The closed kitchen, a true “room within a room” that took up most of the 20 square meters, was removed in favor of a compact, open kitchenette.
While Federica Scalise could knock down partitions, she still couldn’t push back the outside walls. To make the apartment appear larger than it actually is, she played with reflective surfaces: the refrigerator was adorned with a mirror and the kitchen shelves were covered with a silver curtain that capture the light and multiply the reflections and perspectives.
The kitchen takes on a playful air, reminiscent of those festive kindergarten craft workshops, when aluminum foil and cardboard were turned into fairy or astronaut costumes. The unexpected triangular hood reinforces this sense of fun.
In place of the old kitchen, a custom-made bench topped with open shelves and upholstered in bright green fabric conceals storage drawers. A single pillar, the only remnant of the old structure, has been painted bright red. The apartment thus features the three primary colors in a fun and vibrant interplay.
The goal of the renovation was to preserve a bright and airy living space. A custom-made multifunctional blue cabinet covers the main wall.
It conceals the entrance to the bathroom and incorporates a wardrobe and a fold-down bed, thus combining all functions in a single, streamlined structure.
The interior of the wardrobe is lined with a panel made of pressed and dried flowers, delicately crafted by Anko Hellas, which infuses it with a pleasant scent.
The mirrored refrigerator, located next to the wardrobe, is both fun and practical: its perfect for checking on your outfit before going out.
The bathroom retains its original layout, but has been refreshed and made more playful thanks to a clever mix of new and colorful reclaimed tiles, in harmony with the blue-green sink.
The tiling extends into the shower, which is bathed in natural light, creating an ideal space for a few green plants to bring freshness and a bit of life to the room.
