40 m² in Copenhagen: warm minimalism designed to last

The challenge: combining minimalist aesthetics, everyday comfort and storage space. 40 m² Copenhagen, Denmark 85 000 € Cosy minimalism 2 pièces One-bedroom Studio Bara

In Copenhagen, this 40-square-meter two-room dating from 1936 has been completely redesigned by interior architect Bara Nielsen of Studio Bara to become a minimalist, luminous and sustainable space. Behind its clean aesthetic, the project develops a precise approach to compact living: opening up volumes, optimizing every use and creating a warm atmosphere using natural materials and a sober vocabulary.
Opening onto a tree-lined courtyard, the bedroom cultivates a hushed atmosphere. Curtains in café-au-lait hues filter the morning light, enhancing the feeling of a peaceful retreat.

The bedroom combines graphic metal sconces, integrated switches and sober lines in an almost hotel-like spirit.

The project plays more on textures than contrasts: matte metal, slightly sheer curtains and earthy-toned textiles create an enveloping, soft and perfectly homogeneous atmosphere, without ever becoming monotonous.

From the bedroom, the view opens out into the living area, showcasing an apartment that has been completely redesigned for greater fluidity and light. All non-load-bearing partitions have been removed, floors laid, and ceilings rebuilt to create a continuous circulation where light now flows seamlessly through the space from east to west.

Kitchen, dining room and living room merge in a fluid composition, carried by the same natural palette where oak acts as a common thread.

With its sculptural central island and light wood fronts, the kitchen stands out as the vibrant heart of the apartment, a space designed for both cooking and entertaining. Two utility columns harmoniously frame this space: they integrate the different networks (plumbing, water, electricity, drainage) while subtly redefining the transitions between the apartment’s different functions.

The kitchen concentrates all essential appliances in a perfectly optimized space, from the washing machine to the dryer. The textured beige countertop adds a discreet mineral presence that complements the whitewashed walls and wood grain.

Large stone-effect tiles cover the floor of the bathroom, extending the project’s natural palette and reinforcing the impression of a continuous, almost monolithic space.

In the living room, a thin wooden dado rail highlights the wall. This architectural detail, designed to accommodate artwork and graphic prints, relieves the walls of any decorative overload.

Located near the window, the dining room benefits from light at the end of the day. A long, semi-transparent curtain envelops the space, softening the minimalist lines of the design.

In the bathroom, technical constraints disappear behind custom-made paneling in light oak. An elegant way of transforming visible networks into a genuine element of interior architecture.

The bathroom features a combination of solid wood surfaces, white elements, and storage with an integrated mirror.
