38 m² in Paris: like a seaside retreat

The challenge: transforming a succession of small volumes into a continuous space 38 m² Paris, France 40 000 € Retro-contemporary Two-storey Mathilde Guyon

In these 38 square meters extended by a mezzanine, interior designer Mathilde Guyon has completely rethought the layout, initially unbalanced between a large living area and undersized utility spaces. The project asserts the spirit of a seaside cottage perched on the rooftops of Paris, with the Sacré-Cœur on the horizon...

After a complete renovation, the kitchen extends the length of a previously confined space. The half-arch intentionally narrows the passageway to the living room, highlighting, by contrast, the spaciousness of the living area. Full-body porcelain stoneware floor by TopCer.

The design features IKEA storage units with teak-effect, stained and varnished plywood fronts, paired with stainless steel handles. Handcrafted ochre tiles add warmth to this compact and functional space.

From the table, the view of Sacré-Cœur becomes a focal point. This prized vantage point shapes the layout of the living space and enhances the home’s unique character.

Extending from the living room, the dining room is set within a free and evolving decor. Paintings, sketches and collected objects compose a living interior landscape, true to the spirit of “elegant simplicity” claimed by the project.

Open and airy, the living room features a double-height ceiling and abundant natural light. White-painted parquet, bluish tones and warm textures create a seaside atmosphere, filled with vintage furniture and pieces collected over the years. The bespoke sofa, in teak-effect varnished plywood, is adorned with tailor-made cushions.

Mirrors extend perspectives and amplify natural light. This interplay of reflections helps redefine the apartment’s initially unbalanced proportions.

Previously undersized, the bathroom has been completely reorganized to optimize every centimeter. Ochre earthenware and warm hues envelop this compact space.

The terrazzo floor and countertop interact with the wall tiles, extending the project’s mineral palette. A simple design that enhances the streamlined space.

The centerpiece of the project, the custom-designed staircase —made of painted BA13 drywall and pine—serves multiple purposes: kitchen-side storage, a threshold between the kitchen and the living room, and access to the mezzanine. It replaces an old miller’s ladder that was unsuitable for everyday use.

From the mezzanine, the double-height living room is fully revealed. The vertical circulation becomes a defining element, offering new perspectives on the space.

The existing mezzanine has been renovated and fitted with a skylight. It now houses a more comfortable sleeping area. The custom-made headboard is designed to fit the room’s unique layout.
