The online classified ad certainly didn’t make the apartment look like much: three dark pictures, a torn-up floor, crumbling walls. “Luckily, my partner Muriel was motivated to go and have a look, because I thought it would be a waste of time,” Located on the seventh floor of a 1970s building in the 20th arrondissement, the property had been squatted in for two years after the owner’s death. “Everything had been stripped away—carpeting, flooring, etc. The walls were literally falling apart!”

The matching of Charlotte, architect and co-founder of Atelier Apara, and Maud, the owner of this 42-square-meter space, came about through a network of architect friends: a context that immediately instilled confidence, fueled by Maud’s creative sensibility.
For his first purchase, Benjamin opted for a 37-square-meter one-bedroom apartment in Saint-Ouen : “I was looking to buy, but the prices in Paris quickly pushed me to the other side of the périphérique,” he says. “I knew Saint-Ouen a little, I liked its atmosphere, its human-scale architecture… and it’s very well connected. I get around by bike, so it didn’t change my routine much.”
